The Story of the Nine Muses

According to Greek mythology, Zeus, lord of the gods, disguised himself as a shepherd and consorted with Mnemosyne, the Titan goddess of memory, for nine consecutive nights.  The result of their encounter was the creation of the Nine Muses.

The Nine Muses are:

  • Calliope: Muse of epic song
  • Clio:  Muse of history
  • Erato:  Muse of erotic poetry
  • Euterpe:  Muse of lyric song
  • Melpomene:  Muse of tragedy
  • Polyhymnia:  Muse of sacred song
  • Terpsichore:  Muse of dance
  • Thalia:  Muse of comedy
  • Urania:  Muse of astronomy

These nine goddesses, blessed with great beauty and talent,  gave inspiration to artists, philosophers and scientists.  It is believed that ancient writers would appeal to the Muses when they began their work with the hope of receiving inspiration for their stories.

The Muses made it their mission to help the people forget their worries; support and encourage artistic creation; and enhance imagination and inspiration.  Even today, the Nine Muses continue to be symbols of inspiration and artistic creation.
